should start out at the lowest limits/buy-ins, and preferably with
fixed-limit texas
hold em poker when it comes to real money cash games, it is a much
easier game to learn than no-limit holdem cash games.
No-limit holdem cash games requires you to know when and how to make moves like bluffs, steals and traps based on your read of your opponents so you dont become predictable. This is something that can only be learned with expirience.
That is why Sit and
go's, and MTT's at
the lowest levels/buy-ins is the safest way to get started in
no-limit texas hold em online poker, if no-limit texas hold em online
poker is what you want to
play. In Sit and
go's, and MTT's you get the expirience needed for No-limit cash games. You should stick to playing tournaments for at least the first couple of months if you play an hour or two a day until you have become experienced enough to play cash games.
If you are a casual
player that just want to have some fun you should play fixed-limit
texas hold em online poker. Then you can just do what the
calculator tells you to because
there is only a fixed amount you can raise and you almost always have
the pot-odds when you calculator tells you to call. Fixed-limit
texas hold em online poker
is also
fun to play, and there are even fixed-limit texas hold em
online poker tournaments.
Also
make sure
you have an online poker calulator that makes use of pot odds
if you play no-limit texas hold em online poker cash games,
so you know
when a call is profitable or not.
If you are going to
play no-limit texas hold em online poker you
must also now how much to bet in different situations no matter what
poker calculator you use so it is strongly recommended you sign up for
our e-Course where you will learn those things quickly and
easily. You will learn more about both cash games and
tournament
strategy in our easy to follow e-Course.
Settings
for online poker calculators
A
tip is to have
your online poker calculators pre/post flop sliders at very
tight
settings to start with and carefully work your way from there until you
find the ideal settings for the games you usually play. When you see
20%-25% of the flops you have good settings for full ring cash games,
25%-30% seen flops for 6-Max cash games
and around 15%-20% seens flops is good for tournaments in the early
stages, but can also be used the whole tournament. The post flop
settings slider should be about as tight or a little looser than the
pre flop sliders average. It is the average of the early, middle and late positions that make up the total seen flop percentage average for the poker calculator. The settings for the blinds you can usually leave at their default. You can always use the above general
settings that works well for the lower levels if you are new to
this.
If you are a beginner your first choice should be to get a free lifetime licence for Pokerbility. It is easy to set the percentages for Pokerbility according to our recommendations and it has safe betting advice to keep you out of trouble.
Since all online poker calculators sliders work a little
differently
you must check the seen flop percentage
statistics for yourself in your online poker room for specific
statistics when you play if you cant set them in the exact percentage like you can for Pokebility. You could also use a poker tracker like poker edge where
you get very
detailed statistics about your own and your opponents play but the seen flop percentage is ususally enough at the lower
limts.
The
average of 1000
hands is
sufficient to get a good indication of how tight a particular setting
plays
for the calculator you are using and after 10000 hands you can be
completely sure.
Advanced optimisation of your playing style
Optimizing your playing style also depends on the
opposition you are
up against in cash games but this is more important for the higher limits where the players are better. On tight/passive tables where most player
are tight/passive and almost never raise and rarely calls a
raise you can play a little
looser and more aggresive. Against loose-aggresive players you must
play very tight since they will rasie and re-rasie you so you have to
have a good hand against them. If it's full ring (7-10 players) you
must play tighter and at 6-max
you can play looser. In tournaments it depends on what stage the
tournament is in and what stack size you have in relation to the
blinds, and also in relation to the other players at the
table. Optimizing you play for tournaments works a little
different than for cash games.
The
post flop settings
are also depending on the same conditions and should be about the same
as the pre flop settings slider. Ocassionally you will play at a table
where people are very aggressive pre-flop and quite careful post flop
or vice versa and then you will have to adapt the pre and post flop
settings to those different conditions separately.
There are no exact
recommendations to be given so you will have to experiment a little
yourself since different levels and opponets plays differently and your
own skills also matters, I.e the less skills you have the tighter you
should play to minimize the risk of making the wrong decision.
For
example if the games you usually play are full of calling stations or
maniacs that
calls or re-rasies almost any bet you should
not have your settings to loose since you will often be called to the
river against calling stations, and be raised or re-raised by maniacs
so you can't continue to play your decent or half decent hand without
risking
to much.
Very loose settings
are
like bluffing / semi bluffing most of the time (you dont want to
be called or re-raised) so only use those settings against very
tight/passive opponents. Remember that when a tight/passive player
calls a raise or even raises themselfs they usually have a very strong
hand (the same applies to calling stations that raises) so dont push it
to hard against them in those hands, unless you have a very high
winning chance.
In tournaments your
winning chance, the blinds sizes, your stack size and the stage the
tournament is in is much more important than pot odds since you will
be
knocked out if
you lose your stack even if you had the pot odds for a loose call... so
playing by pot
odds is not something you should primarily do in tournaments since
survival and placing in the money is the main goal. Just play tight
and avoid large confrontations where you risk to much of your stack
without having a very strong hand in the early stages. In the
later stages you will have to take more risks if you are short stacked
and just go all-in with any half decent hand in late position in
unrasied pots. If you have a large stack and are not chased by the
pressure of the increasing blinds you can always play tight and avoid
large confrontaions
no
matter what stage it is in. If you have one of the largest stacks at
the table you can also bully the short stacks with any decent
hand since you don't risk to much of your stack doing it. They are
usually desperate and go all-in with any half-decent hand and there is
a
big chance your decent hand is better than theirs so you can knock them
out.
If you think all
this optimizing your play stuff seems complicated don't worry because
you can be a winning poker player even without optimising your play and
only use a poker calculator with textual betting advice as long as you
play at the lower levels and use our recommended general settings for
it.
If
you do want to learn how to optimize
your play for the higher levels once you have passed the newbie stage
and become an
intermediate player Poker Edge will make it very easy for you to do
that. You can also use Holdem Indicator or Tournament Indicator for
this but they are not as feature rich poker trackers as Poker Edge.
They are however easier to learn how to use and has the most important
poker tracker features and most usefull player statistics besides
giving you all the important odds. They are perfect if you only
want to use one online poker tool once you have passed the newbie stage
and don't need a poker calculator with textual betting advice anymore.
The higher limits
you play at the more important it is to use some kind of poker tracker
so you can optimise your play and adapt it to both the table conditions
and the individual player your are up against to increase your chance
of making the right decisions and maximize your profits.
